Pensievision, an SCRA member company founded by College of Charleston astrophysics professor Dr. Joe Carson, has successfully launched its precision 3D imaging technology to the International Space Station, marking a major milestone for the South Carolina-based deep tech company.

The company’s imaging device was integrated aboard a mission supporting research on extremophile microorganisms, organisms capable of surviving in some of the harshest environments imaginable. Pensievision’s technology is designed to capture high-precision depth, structure, and anomaly data beyond what traditional imaging systems can detect.

Originally developed using NASA satellite technology, Pensievision’s core imaging platform has applications across healthcare, manufacturing, and scientific research. The same technology has been used in rural clinics in Africa to support cervical cancer detection and in manufacturing environments to identify microscopic defects.

Dr. Joe Carson, founder of Pensievision, and recipient of SCRA’s 2024 Applied Researcher of the Year award, continues to advance groundbreaking innovation through the company’s work at the intersection of space technology, medical imaging, and advanced research.
